Engine & Transmission Bits

Story So Far:-

  • Errm, not a lot really. About the only major change was swapping the Dellortos for a pair of Kehin FCR41 roller flatsides and individual K&Ns. The main upshot of this is that 'givin it a handful' is now a single action instead of the 'givin it handful then moving your hand a bit without letting go then giving it another bit of a handful'. 145° down to 90° - bliss.
  • Collector box replaced with OS Stainless crossover. This makes a huge difference to the midrange, there is also nearly a 3kg weight saving.
  • End cans have been 'tuned' with a fugoff metal spike through the baffles from the inside.
  • Replaced gear linkage ball joints with nickel plated items and s/s rod.
  • Bevel box has been powder coated and a vent tube tapped into the filler plug. Rocker covers stripped and polished.
  • Alloy head protectors fitted made by Joe Kenny in the U.S..
  • Oil feed to heads replaced with st/st hoses.
  • GG oil temp/dipstick fitted.

To Be Done:-

  • I have aquired through the power of EBay a spare set of heads which I want to get gasflowed and twin plugged .
  • Also from Ebay are a pair of 95mm and 96mm pistons, but as I currently have no information on their manufacturer I can't get barrel/ring measurements (HELLPP!!!).
  • Everyone keeps mentioning about the fifth gear letting go, so I have purchased a 'box from a California 1100i that needs a new case and will look into replacing that in advance of any lemming like tendancies manifesting themselves. This will also drop the gearing slightly giving slightly better acceleration at the expense of a little top end speed.
  • Other gearbox mods should include shimming and trying to uprate the clutch .
  • Get the all the casings vapour blasted ASAP.
  • Consider making an alternative exhaust systems, I quite like the system seen here, which I thought was from Dynotek but is actually a Saxon (thanks Paul).

Problems:-

  • Front LHS engine mounting bolt didn't just sieze, it molecularly bonded itself to the engine casing!!.. ..well at least that's what must have happened because it would not budge even with extreme amounts of 'persuasion'. After eventually shearing the head off, the bolt transmuted into Adamantium as I used a box and a half of drill bits. You could actually see the tip of the drill bit turn to butter within a three foot radius of the bike.
  • Bolt came loose from inner torque arm mount on bevel box and milled out copius amounts of metal from the hub of my rear wheel at 70mph. Ohyafookir.
  • Front RHS engine mounting bolt fell out at about 1000 miles.
  • Gear linkage came loose just as I pulled out of a side street...which was nice. About 3000 miles.
  • Clamp on driveshaft that retains spring against UJ shattered on motorway at 70mph at 5000 miles. Part of it lodging between the wheel rim and swingarm, jamming in not enough to lock up the rear but enough to give me a cold sweat even now. 3X (old UK importers) said part was on back order and should be in by Christmas - this was in August. A friend made me a new one from bar steel, and it is still on there, warranty item never did arrive.
